　岡崎という城下町で、３００有余年の伝統を守り続ける「和ろうそく」。昔ながらの手作り製法で、今もなお造り続けられています。現代まで続けられた、その理由には、日本国内でしか入手できない素材の良さと、他では得られない、「和ろうそく」特有の柔らかい、暖かい炎に魅了されるためと考えられます。

魂を温かく包む和ろうそくの世界

人は誰でも一本のろうそくを、その身の内に持っている・・・といったら、おとぎ話と思われるだろうか。
生命の光をろうそくにたとえた昔はなしは、洋の東西を問わず存在する。
そんな話を聞くとき、私たちは、なぜだか不思議な安らぎを感じるもの。
やわらかな光と、完成された形状を持つ和ろうそく。
全身が、少しずつ短くなる様は、愛らしく、美しく、そして人間的だ。
そしてそれは、身のうちに持つ一本のろうそくが、静かに協調の反応を起こす存在・・・・。
和ろうそくが安らぎを与える理由が、ここにある。

ハゼの実が育んだ炎

和ろうそくを製造しているところは、現在、全国で１０数軒。
すべての行程が手作業であり熟練するまでに長い年月が必要な「職人の世界」がここにあります。
原料は天然のハゼの実。現在では九州地方で採取されますが、年々その数は少なくなっています。

手のひらで何度もロウをかけていきます

和ろうそくの原料となるロウは、ハゼの実から抽出し根気と井戸水で精製したもの。
それを鉄鍋で溶かすところからろうそく職人の仕事が始まります。
まず初めに、い草の繊維で作った芯にロウをつけ、ろうそくの基本形を作ります。［ふりかけ］
その周りに手のひらでロウをかけていきます。［下がけ］
乾いたらかけ、また乾かし、またかけるという根気のいる作業を何度も繰り返すのです。
最後に化粧ロウで表面を整え［上がけ］
ろうそくの先を切断［芯だし］
こうした複雑で熟練した職人のわざを経て、はじめて、手づくりならではの味を持ちながら、完成された美を持つろうそくが出来上がるのです。

約４グラムで三十分間炎を楽しむことが出来ます

和ろうそくの種類は、大きく分けて二つ。
「棒型」と、型の部分が広がった「いかり型」です。
またろうそくは、重さで区別します。
一匁（匁・もんめ・は約３．７５グラム）でおよそ三十分、五匁で一時間半ほど燃えつづけます。
いわゆる西洋ろうそくは、綿糸を芯にパラフィンやステアリン等を鋳型に流し込んで作られます。

ほのかで優しい光が大切な人の心をとらえるかも

ろうそくと聞くと、時に抹香臭いと感じられがちですが、それは仏事によく使われるから。
だからといって、ろうそくが神仏の為だけの存在というわけではありません。
やわらかな和ろうそくの炎をはさんで、大切な人とふたりだけのパーティはいかがでしょう。
普段は言えない本心が、きっと伝えられますよ。
また、一日の終わりを、一本の和ろうそくと、お気に入りのスコッチで締めくくる。
そんな心の贅沢も、安らぎの炎が実現してくれます。
ゆとりと安らぎ、そして贅沢な気分を空間に作り出す。

電車　関東・関西より新幹線にて「名古屋」駅へ
電車　私鉄・「名古屋鉄道・名古屋本線」へ乗り換え、「東岡崎」駅へ(所要30分)
バス　バスステーション「5番」乗り場より「康生・大樹寺｣方面バスへ乗車、「本町」バス停にて下車(東岡崎より4つ目、所要10分)

　Here I introduce an amazing Japanese-style-candle shop called “ISOBE ROUSOKU (candle) shop”. 　It is a rare shop which manufactures homemade warousoku by hand. 　It is located in Hachiman-cho the name of which is suitable for a castle town Okazaki. 　The following story I heard from a chandler is written about the Japanese-style-candle. I hope you will enjoy reading it. THE FLUTTERING OF A CANDLELIGHT The world of warousoku which warmly wraps the spirit 　It is said anybody has a candle in his or herself.
Do you think it is a fairy tale?
　There are legends which compare life lights to candles in irrespective of eastern and western countries. When we meet those legends, we inexplicably find our minds at peace.
　The Japanese-style-candle has a soft and perfect form. The way the candle will gradually be shortened seems lovely, beautiful, and humane. It is when the candle in ourselves harmonizes with us. That's the reason the Japanese-style-candle gives us peace of mind. The candle made from sumac nuts 　There are only ten-odd Japanese-style-candle manufacturers in Japan now. All working processes are taken by hand. It will take years before an artisan gets fully skilled.
The materials are the nuts of natural sumacs. They are harvested in the Kyusyu district. But the yield shows a yearly decrease. The pouring of wax by using the palm of the hand 　The wax which is used for making the Japanese-style-candle is extracted from the nuts of sumacs．It is refined with patience and well water. The world of the artisan opens its door when he starts melting the wax in an iron cauldron.
　First, he makes the fundamental form of the candle by applying wax to the wick which is made from rush fibers.
　Then, he pours the molten wax over the wick with the palm of the hand. When it is dried, he pours again. These pouring and drying processes are repeated alternately until the required thickness is built up. It needs a lot of patience. 　Finally, he covers any unevenness in the finished candle by applying the best quality wax and cut the tip of the candle.
　With all these complicated and skillful arts of the artisan, the candle which has the handmade taste and perfect form will be born. Half-an-hour enjoyment of the candlelight with about 4 grams 　There are two types of Japanese-style-candle.
One is a stick type and the other is Japanese traditional type.
The latter looks like it has squared shoulders.
The weight is also a way of distinction.
One monme(about 3.75 grams) burns for about half an hour, and five monme about one and half hours.
　So-called western candles consist of a cylinder of paraffin wax or other flammable material such as stearin surrouding a central wick which is usually made from plaited cotton fibers. Most of them are made by molding. The warm and gentle light might attract a dear heart. 　The candles are likely to be associated with religious purposes.
That's because they are often used for Buddhist ceremonies.
The candles, however, don't exist only for gods and Buddha.
Why don't you have a party with your sweetheart over a soft Japanese-style-candlelight?
You can confide your own feelings very effectively.
At the end of the day you feel relieved with one Japanese-style-candle and a glass of Scotch whisky.
