ラベンダーに魅せられて

私のお気に入りのハーブは、何といってもラベンダー。
初夏の訪れと共に、私の庭ではラベンダーが咲き始め、風が吹く度に、さわやかな甘い香りが紫色の花穂から漂ってきます。
私が初めてラベンダーを知ったのは、少女時代に愛読した（赤毛のアン）シリーズの中の１冊（アンの青春）を読んだ折りです。この本の中には、森の中にひっそりと建つラベンダーの植え込みがある家で昔の恋人を想いつづけているミスラベンダーが、登場します。あの当時、本物のラベンダーはまだ見たこともありませんでしたが、ミスラベンダーの持つロマンチックな雰囲気とラベンダーの花のイメージが重なって憧れの花になりました。
早いもので、実際、庭でラベンダーを育て始めて、もう１０年以上になります。初めは、この地中海沿岸地方原産の植物の性質をよく理解していなかったため、枯らしてしまうこともしばしばありました。最近やっと、いつまでもつきあっていける気心の知れた仲になれたかなと思います。
ラベンダーの魅力は、まず、花や茎葉の香りのよさにあります。この芳香は、実にさわやかで、すがすがしく甘さを含んでいて、心身をリラックスさせてくれます。また、香りが長持ちするので、ポプリ、サシェ、バンドルズなどの材料として、幅広く利用されています。
日本の高温多湿の夏は、少し苦手ですが、耐寒性があり容器栽培にも適しています。日本の気候に合った改良種も販売されるようになってきましたので、育ててみてはいかがでしょうか。

I am a devotee of lavender.
With the arrival of early summer, lavender will begin to bloom, and my garden will be fragrant with the wonderful smell of the plant.
The start of life-long interest took shape when I read "Anne of Avonlea" in my school days. One of the characters named Miss Lavender in that book and her family story related to lavender impressed me very much.
More than ten years have passed since I started growing lavender in my garden. At first, many shrubs of lavender died. I could not muster any tender loving care, because I had little knowledge about the plant's preferred growing conditions. But now, the existence of lavender is just like having a reliable friend.
The scent of lavender is a major part of its attraction. It is refreshing and sweet, and it functions as a mild sedative. As lavender will stay fragrant for a long time, it can be used in making small scented articles like pot-pourri, sachet, bundles, etc.
Lavender does not feel comfortable in Japanese sweltering hot summer, but it can survive moderate frosts and thrive in pots. A few hybrid types suited for the Japanese climate are coming on sale.. Why don't you try to grow one?
